All eyes are on Washington today where members of the House have voted to push through a bill that will avoid the potentially disastrous fiscal cliff. But as Eila Adams is about to tell you despite the new agreement there is STILL a rough road ahead. KC) What_s going on EIla?EA) Kat after an exhaustive round of heated negotiations Tuesday night the US House of Representatives voted 257 to 167 in favor of the bill. 172 Democrats and 85 Republicans supported the new legislation with 151 Republicans and 16 Democrats voting against it. The new bill will see taxes rise for the wealthiest 2-percent while limiting the impact on the country_s middle class. However it does not address the US debt ceiling which will need to be raised again after hitting the 16.3 trillion dollar mark. The bill also delays major federal spending cuts which would reduce the budgets of most agencies and programs by 8 to 10 percent. QUICK TURN TO TVEA) In other words Kat there_s still a LOT of work to be done. KC) So now that they_ve avoided this first hurdle Eila what kind of deadlines lie ahead?EA) As far as the debt ceiling goes politicians will need to agree to raise the limits by late February or early March.KC) And we all know how that went last year when political squabbling led to a US credit downgrade. And what about these other budget cuts?EA) Well this new bill delayed the budget slashes to federal programs - which are known in Washington as the sequester - for about two months. According to the White House failing to alter the cuts could have a devastating impact on defense and non-defense programs. KC) It_ll be very interesting to see how this unfolds we_ll be watching thanks very much Eila.
