The topographic work has progressed very satisfactorily under the present organization of that branch Of the Survey. While the output in square miles is not so large as for some previous years, the proportion in relation to the appropriation is greater, and the quality of the maps is considerably better, owing to the introduction of more accurate vertical control and to the requirement of greater care in sketching the topography.
