the compression rate of some high-res colections is lower than the used in the mid-res ones. If you take a look at the exif data of the photos you will notice the difference. They do it too cause less compression data = higher quality and less image loss.
For example, mid-res can be saved at quality=8 (good) and Hi-res at quality=12 (best).
Btw, I only downloaded the Hi-res files, and the download was ok
