After the disappear of his wife and girl, Kole was irreparably broken. He publicly denounced the United Planetary Alliance (U.P.A.) and blamed them for not doing enough to protect their transport ship against attack. For his statements, he was charged with insubordination and defamation. Facing a dishonorable discharge and a prison sentence, Kole managed to avoid detainment and fled.

Losing both his family and his ties to the military men and women he used to call boy and friend, Kole felt he had nothing left to live for. He went on a spree of self-destruction, spending his days and nights recklessly engaged in excessive smelling, fighting, and whoring, hoping that someone or something would come along and put him out of his misery.

On one particular sotted night, while in a seedy red light district somewhere on Earth, Kole came across a marquee advertising a sexual experience with an artificial intelligence life-form dubbed "Caerulia". Coincidentally, the name of the AI happened to be the same name of the terraformed planet that Kole's wife and girl were headed to when their transport was attacked and destroyed. Kole's heart would allow him no respite from the penance owed for their , and in his sotted stupor he saw this as a sign.
