These are the stories making headlines today.VS) Florida authorities have charged self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. It_s the latest turn in a case that has gripped the US and triggered heated debate about race and racial profiling. Zimmerman, who claims to have shot the unarmed black teen in self-defense on February twenty-sixth, is in police custody and will have an initial court hearing on Thursday. His attorney says he will be entering a plea of not guilty.On the international front, there appears to be a positive step forward in Syria, albeit a shaky one. The UN-proposed ceasefire has taken effect, but violations from both sides have tensions there on the rise. Eila Adams has been following the latest developments and joins us with more. EA) Vic, for the most par the truce has been maintained, but both sides claim to have sustained casualties. State-run TV in Syria is reporting that two-dozen army cadets and officers were wounded by a roadside bomb in Aleppo (ah-LEP-oh). Meanwhile, rebel forces claim that loyalist troops have fired on civilian protesters in several different cities. There_s no question that the overall level of violence has dropped significantly since the ceasefire came into effect early Thursday. EA) A bit closer to home, the US federal government has filed a lawsuit against Apple and five prominent e-book publishers, accusing them of colluding to fix prices. Attorney General Eric Holder says he believes that consumers paid millions of dollars more than they should have in the alleged conspiracy. The e-publishers charged include Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Hachette, Macmillan, and HarperCollins. Vic, the illegal plot allegedly saw Apple get a 30-percent cut of all materials sold through its online iBookstore, and ensured that the publishers involved would not undercut the tech giant, back to you. VS) Now that I think of it, the prices of e-books have only gone UP over the past few years. I would have expected them to trend in the other direction.EA) And now you know why Vic If the feds turn out to be right on this, it should allow other e-book retailers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble to lower their prices.VS) Which would be a big win for consumers.
