These are the stories making headlines today.VS) Florida authorities have charged self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. It_s the latest turn in a case that has gripped the US and triggered heated debate about race and racial profiling. Zimmerman, who claims to have shot the unarmed black teen in self-defense on February twenty-sixth, is in police custody and will have an initial court hearing on Thursday. His attorney says he will be entering a plea of not guilty.On the international front, there appears to be a positive step forward in Syria, albeit a shaky one. The UN-proposed ceasefire has taken effect, but violations from both sides have tensions there on the rise. Eila Adams has been following the latest developments and joins us with more. EA) Vic, for the most par the truce has been maintained, but both sides claim to have sustained casualties. State-run TV in Syria is reporting that two-dozen army cadets and officers were wounded by a roadside bomb in Aleppo (ah-LEP-oh). Meanwhile, rebel forces claim that loyalist troops have fired on civilian protesters in several different cities. There_s no question that the overall level of violence has dropped significantly since the ceasefire came into effect early Thursday. EA) A bit closer to home, the US federal government has filed a lawsuit against Apple and five prominent e-book publishers, accusing them of colluding to fix prices. Attorney General Eric Holder says he believes that consumers paid millions of dollars more than they should have in the alleged conspiracy. The e-publishers charged include Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Hachette, Macmillan, and HarperCollins. Vic, the illegal plot allegedly saw Apple get a 30-percent cut of all materials sold through its online iBookstore, and ensured that the publishers involved would not undercut the tech giant, back to you. VS) Now that I think of it, the prices of e-books have only gone UP over the past few years. I would have expected them to trend in the other direction.EA) And now you know why Vic If the feds turn out to be right on this, it should allow other e-book retailers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble to lower their prices.VS) Which would be a big win for consumers. Tensions between western nations and the rogue state are higher than ever.VS) And now international inspectors have landed in Tehran to get an up close and personal look at the nation_s controversial nuclear capabilities. Here_s the latest.1. VS) Senior officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency have descended on Iran amid ongoing concerns about their nuclear program. The six-member delegation is in the country to start a dialogue that is long overdue. Among the delegates are the IAEA_s chief inspector as well as its second in command.PP) This comes after the US EU and Australia imposed tough new sanctions over Iran_s nuclear program. While the allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons Iran vigorously denies it insisting they_re enriching uranium for use in energy only. An Iranian official says this trip should resolve any ambiguity and show their transparency regarding their nuclear aims. 2. VS) Although it may be hard to believe the US is in peace talks with the Taliban Several negotiators have been meeting with American officials in Qatar (kah-TAR) where they_re engaging in so-called trust-building measures. That includes discussions of a possible prisoner transfer.PP) However the Taliban have not publicly acknowledged that they_re engaging in any talks with the US. America on the other hand isn_t denying that negotiations are underway. Meanwhile the Afghan government was initially angry about not being involved but have since accepted that the talks would take place without their involvement.3. VS) Elsewhere in the Middle East the Syrian capital of Damascus saw some of its fiercest fighting to date over the weekend. At least 26 casualties were reported in the exchange between Syrian troops and opposition forces. The Syrian army regained control of much of the suburban region of Saqba (SAK-buh). PP) While the rebel Free Syrian Army seems to have been largely defeated it appears that they still have a small presence in the suburbs. Overall at least 60 people lost their lives nationwide just one day after the Arab League suspended its monitoring mission in Syria. Accurate reports of activity in the region are difficult to come by Vic as foreign journalists are being heavily restricted.VS) A very scary situation there Peyton and it doesn_t look like it_s going to get better any time soon.PP) Unfortunately not. Eila by the end of 2015 there were 3.2 BILLION people online Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made it his goal to bring internet access to everyone on the planet. Facebook_s figures show 200 million more people were plugged in last year thanks to more affordable data and rising global incomes. Zuckerberg launched the Internet.org campaign three years ago to bring the economic opportunities of the internet to everyone. He_s still got a long way to go. The latest numbers show there are still 4.1 billion people without online access. Now to a damning report on the stunning lack of diversity in Hollywood. A study from USC has found that the majority of leading media companies are quote unquote whitewashed and that an epidemic of invisibility is affecting women minorities and members of the LGBT community in show business. The exhaustive report looked at 109 major movies and 305 TV series finding that only a third of speaking characters were women and that just 2 percent were LGBT-identified. Things were even worse BEHIND the camera where about 90 percent of directors were white men. And California health officials have voted AGAINST a bill that would have forced porn actors to wear condoms. The bill needed four yes votes to pass but ended one short at 3 to 2 in favor. It appears legislators listened to complaints from the porn industry that people don_t want to watch films where the actors are wearing protection. They claimed that forcing condom laws would ruin the multi-billion dollar industry or force it underground. Eila they_d argued that if porn production went underground it would become even more dangerous to performers due to a lack of testing.Makes sense to me.
