Natasha_s in the Naked Newsroom to tell us what_s happening down there.Angie, a torrential downpour and the overloading of rivers has caused severe flooding in both areas, with Louisiana_s capital, Baton Rouge, being hit particularly hardIs it true that Baton Rouge got nearly a foot of rain in 24 hours?They did indeed and that_s just part of why Louisiana_s Governor called the floods unprecedented in modern history. Here_s the story Angie. The Governors of Louisiana and Mississippi have declared states of emergency over the flooding. More than 20 thousand people have been rescued so far, with thousands of homes damaged or destroyed and more than 10 thousand people now in shelters. According to the National Guard, there are thousands of of rescue workers deployed, helping stranded citizens and their pets evacuate large areas that have been flooded. And unfortunately, the water likely won_t be cresting any time soon. More rain is forecast for the region. Florida_s total of non-travel Zika cases keeps growing. Three more local infections have been confirmed, bringing the area_s total up to 28 While health officials still believe all the Zika transmission is occurring within a one square mile area, one of the three infected lives outside the zone, though still in Miami-Dade County. Florida also reported 10 new travel-related cases, bringing the total number of Floridians with the virus up to 413 The Zika epidemic is dramatically worse in Puerto Rico. It_s to a point now that the federal government has declared a public health emergency there The announcement followed the island_s reporting of over 19-hundred new cases, bringing their total to over TEN THOUSAND Health officials expect that by the end of the ear Angie, a full quarter of Puerto Rico_s population will be infectedAnd the actual number of infections is likely much higher, since MOST people show no symptoms Scary stuff, thanks Nat.
