Here_s the story Angie. The Governors of Louisiana and Mississippi have declared states of emergency over the flooding. More than 20 thousand people have been rescued so far, with thousands of homes damaged or destroyed and more than 10 thousand people now in shelters. According to the National Guard, there are thousands of of rescue workers deployed, helping stranded citizens and their pets evacuate large areas that have been flooded. And unfortunately, the water likely won_t be cresting any time soon. More rain is forecast for the region. Florida_s total of non-travel Zika cases keeps growing. Three more local infections have been confirmed, bringing the area_s total up to 28 While health officials still believe all the Zika transmission is occurring within a one square mile area, one of the three infected lives outside the zone, though still in Miami-Dade County. Florida also reported 10 new travel-related cases, bringing the total number of Floridians with the virus up to 413 The Zika epidemic is dramatically worse in Puerto Rico. The former grocery store employee had been convicted of taking pictures up a woman_s skirt with his cellphone camera while she shopped The court_s decision hinged on the idea that the private place referred to in the privacy law had to be a physical location, not part of the body. The majority opinion condemned Gary_s behavior but said it wasn_t technically illegal. Lawmakers are already working on legislation to fix the legal loophole, so enjoy it while you can, pervs The toxic blue-green algae that has caused many problems in Florida has now hit the state of Utah and one of the largest fresh water lakes in the US. The 150-square-mile Utah Lake is now covered with the toxic gunk. Besides the foul smell, the toxic algae causes a literal and figurative rash of health problems. This after a German customer found a bit of plastic in his Snickers bar last month. The defect has been traced back to a factory in the Netherlands, which distributed candies around the globe. A Mars spokesman says the risk of other chocolates being contaminated is low, but the company doesn_t want to take any chances. American customers don_t have to worry, since the recall doesn_t impact any products stateside. The CDC has traced a multi-state outbreak of salmonella to alfalfa sprouts. There have been 13 cases reported since the start of December across Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. 5 of the sick people have been hospitalized. Health officials believe the contamination came from sprouts grown by Kansas-based Sweetwater Farms. 12 of the 13 patients reported eating at restaurants, and at least five of the eateries were supplied by Sweetwater. And in other news, NASA has revealed that a giant flaming space rock exploded over the Atlantic Ocean on February 6th NASA says the fireball blew up in the air 620 miles from the coast of Brazil. The blast was measured at 13-thousand tons of TNT - which is roughly the same amount of force generated by the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima in 1945. Experts say the rock was about 20 feet in diameter. It_s the first incident of its kind since 2013, when a meteor slammed into the Russian city of Chelyabinsk (chill-YA-binsk) and injured 16-hundred people. It all sounds pretty scary, but scientists say the event in Brazil was tiny compared to the one in Russia.Thank goodness it happened over the ocean and not a busy, populated area.
