Just about everyone was stunned, including the military and the media. It was all part of his master plan though because he was there to announced a new agreement between the two countries.He committed to pulling 23-thousand troops out of the country by the end of this summer. He also claims that he would stick to the deadline of turning security completely over to the Afghan government by 2014. Obama insisted the US would not be building permanent bases or patrolling the country. This is his third visit to Afghanistan since taking office, and it coincides with the 1-year anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden.A Bosnian immigrant has been convicted of plotting to bomb the New York subway system. Adis Medunjanin (ah-DEES meh-doo-jah-NEEN) was recruited by al Qaeda to perform the suicide mission with two co-conspirators. Unfortunately for him, the 2 other men testified against him, revealing just how close they were to pulling the plot off. They apparently targeted the subway because it represented the heart of everything in New York City. It took less than 2 days for a jury to find him guilty of numerous terror charges, including conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. Medunjanin faces life in prison when he_s sentenced on September 7th. In another bombing plot - this one home-grown - 5 men were arrested for planning to blow up a Cleveland-area bridge. The FBI caught the men - some of whom are self-described anarchists - in a sting operation. They say that nobody was ever in any danger, since the C4 the plotters bought was inert and controlled by an undercover agent. The group also allegedly conspired to topple financial institution signs on top of high rise buildings. Supplies are at their highest point in eighty years and officials say they are literally running out of places to store it all. If things keep up at their current pace storage facilities will hit their limit in mid-April and some think oil could fall as low as twenty dollars a barrel It_s more bad news for US retailer Target. The company has announced a restructuring plan that includes thousands of job cuts and 2 billion dollars in cost-saving measures. The majority of the job losses will come from Target_s headquarters. CEO Brian Cornell says the moves are all about cutting complexity and making the retailer more competitive. This just after Target announced plans to completely exit out of Canada laying off over 17 thousand people and amassing billions in losses. Meanwhile Oprah Winfrey is laying off close to 200 staff members after announcing her Chicago-based Harpo Studios complex will be shutting down. On Tuesday it was announced that all operations will be moved to her Los Angeles location. Oprah released a statement saying she was sad to leave the Windy City studios she called home for 26 years. Our top story today once again comes out of Syria.VS) That_s right. Russia_s involvement in the conflict there has been a major cause for concern amongst western powers.ES) And those fears will only be heightened with this latest development. Russia is sending two warships - and hundreds of marines - to the region. VS) This is your news off the top1. VS) Two Russian amphibious assault ships are en route for Syrian waters, and will be docking in the port of Tartus. Moscow says that the ships have been deployed to protect Russian personnel and equipment in the event of a full-scale evacuation. Syria is a major stronghold for Russia in the Middle East, and the port of Tartus is their only naval base outside of the former Soviet Union. ES) The Russian naval base there is believed to house very sophisticated electronic eavesdropping gadgets, and there are rumors that it could be attacked by Syrian rebels. The two ships could carry as many as 600 troops, which will be used to dismantle the base. However, other intelligence reports claim the ships will be carrying anti-aircraft missiles and other heavy artillery for the Syrian army.2. VS) In other news today, Myanmar human rights champion Aung San Suu Kyi (ONG SAN SOO CHEE) is making a landmark visit to the United Kingdom. The formerly imprisoned political activist and leader kicked things off with a debate at the London School of Economics. It_s her first trip to Europe since 1988.ES) Suu Kyi will spend 4 days in the UK, and her stay will include visits with the royal family and members of British parliament. It_s just part of a 2-week international tour that has sparked hopes of true political reform in Myanmar. Suu Kyi will also be making stops in Switzerland, France, and Norway. 3. VS) Canadian murder suspect Luka Magnotta has been extradited and returned home. The 29-year old, accused of killing a Montreal university student and putting his body parts in the mail, was the focus of an international manhunt until he was apprehended in Berlin on June fourth. Magnotta landed at Montreal_s Mirabel airport Monday night.ES) Canadian detectives planned to interrogate Magnotta ahead of his initial court appearance in Quebec. Canadian government officials thanked Germany for helping to catch the fugitive, and for his swift extradition home. When his case goes to court, it will be one of the most closely watched Canadian trials in years Vic. VS) No doubt about that. It_s comforting to know he_ll face justice here on Canadian soil.ES) Indeed.
